Meet Dr. Jon Matthews

Matthews Equine Services, Inc.
Jon S. Matthews, D.V.M.
Dr. Jon S. Matthews was raised on a horse ranch in San Diego County, California. At this farm, horses were bred and trained for showing and racing. In his teens and twenties he worked, broke and pre-trained thoroughbred horses. In the 1980's he was the breeder, owner and pre-trainer of a successful racehorse that raced and won on the major California racing circuit.
He holds two diplomas from the University of California, Davis. The first, a Bachelor of Science degree with major in Veterinary Science. The second is the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine which he received in 1989. He not only holds a FEI Certification Card to treat horses at a sanctioned FEI event but is also licensed by the California Horse Racing Board. He is a member of the American Association of Equine Practioners and an authorized Stem Phase Veterinarian using the latest in stem cell therapy.
From a family of veterinarians, Dr. Jon Matthews' brother Matt, his sister-in-law Nancy and Great Grandfather were or are currently practicing veterinarians. Always innovative in his profession, Dr. Jon Matthews has been a pioneer in embryo transfer, dry land distemper treatments, and diagnostic acupuncture. In partnership with his brother on embryo transfer techniques, they were the first veterinarians in the United States to have a successful live foal born via embryo transfer where frozen semen was used.
Due to the prevalence of cases in Ramona, Dr. Jon Matthews has developed a successful diagnostic and treatment protocol for ulcerative lymphangitis (dry land distemper or pigeon fever). His treatment protocol is not only effective with the lymphangitis and abscess phases of the disease, but also the dangerous internal abscess condition that can develop.
During the past 20 years, Dr. Jon Matthews has emerged as an innovator in integrative medicine. He has used gold implants extensively and successfully for pain relief and neurological disorders. Currently, Dr. Jon Matthews is a leading expert in pain origin discovery via diagnostic acupuncture. He has developed a system which has proven very effective in sport horse performance enhancement. With the use of this system, the potential of an equine athlete is maximized through balance and pain origin discovery and treatment. With this system the source of the primary and compensation lameness can be determined. Once the source of the pain is discovered, Dr. Jon Matthews uses an integrative/holistic approach for the management of this pain. Using the best of both Western and Eastern medicine disciplines, the pain can be managed and balance of the kinetics maximized.
Dr. Jon Matthews is an international sport horse veterinarian. He has worked as a FEI Certified treating veterinarian in Europe, Asia, North America, and Australia and New Zealand. He has treated horses for the U.S., German, French, Chinese, Mexican, Tibetan, New Zealand, and Portuguese National Equestrian Teams. He has been employed as the FEI treating veterinarian for the Longines Beijing Masters stadium jumping show from 2013 to 2017, as well as the 2017-18 World Cup in Paris, France. He has also been the rodeo veterinarian for the Ramona Rodeo for 30 consecutive years, sanctioned by the PRCA.
Dr. Jon Matthews treats many types of sport horse disciplines from racehorses, show jumpers as well as dressage horses and rodeo event horses. He is the founder and owner of Matthews Equine Services, Inc. This company is a full service ambulatory equine practice providing preventive medicine, dentistry, surgery, lameness, and chiropractic and acupuncture services.
Dr. Jon Matthews and his wife, Robin, work together in the practice and currently live in Ramona, California.
