In the winter of 2015 I had the pleasure of spending a lot of time with Dr Matthews in California whilst I was caring for and preparing a horse for the World Cup Finals in Las Vegas. What Dr Matthews was able to achieve with that particular horse over the course of 2 1/2 months was truly astounding, and I went from his biggest skeptic to being in awe of his work. The horse that I was caring for, Kiwi Iron Mark, then went on to win the Grand Prix of Las Vegas at the World Cup Finals and was a picture of soundness and health. Imagine how lucky I felt when upon returning home to New Zealand, Dr Matthews contacted me and started to plan a trip to New Zealand. I ride to Grand Prix level myself with my own string of horses, and I felt privileged to invite Jon and Robin into our home and show them around our area (even if the weather was less than desirable!). I got two of my grand prix horses evaluated, and as was shown during my time over seas, Dr Matthews worked through the horses in a detailed and thorough manner. He is astute in his approach and his methods are innovative and effective, as has been proven many times over. Certain problems were identified in my horses, as well as problems that had not even yet come to fruition, and to have these identified and treated has left me with peace of mind, and I’m excited to see how the horses will progress in their training from here and at their next show. On of the horses in particular had pulled up lame with an injury a couple of shows ago and today, one week after Dr Matthews treated him, he is much more sound and happy in himself, running around bucking in the field. He is a work in progress but we now have a plan, and have made great progress towards getting him showing successfully again. Jon and Robin are both such lovely people and are really easy to ask questions and talk to, which makes them a pleasure to deal with. I’m really excited to see how the horses progress from here as I have first hand seen the results that Dr Matthews can achieve. How amazing it was to welcome a vet of this caliber to New Zealand and have him work with my horses and I, and I look forward to spending more time with him over the coming years in New Zealand and abroad.
